The kitchen is undoubtedly the center of most homes today. Creating the kitchen that you’ve always dreamed of having is a one-of-a-kind experience. Here are a few options to consider while designing your dream kitchen:
- Drawers, Drawers, Drawers – Just like they say Location, Location, Location in real estate, we say the same about drawers in the kitchen. They are useful for everyone and everything, easy to access, and there is no wasted space. The more drawers the better, in our opinion!
- Open Shelves – This is a look we love and it is a hot trend for 2018. It is definitely not for everyone, but if you’re looking for simplicity, this just may work! If you can’t see yourself ditching all of the cabinets, consider a small area or adding cubbies somewhere. But always ask, what function will they serve? Having open or bare shelves is not what you want in your home.
- Super Islands – Islands are getting bigger and definitely better. But you have to make sure that your island works for you! What purpose do you want your island to serve?? A gathering spot for entertaining? An essential tool for the chef? A place for homework or a quick bite to eat? If it is for entertaining, add a wine fridge. If it is solely for the chef perhaps you add an integrated cutting board or a piece of butcher block. Or if your island will be used for the kids to sit at, add a sitting space that is either elevated or a connected table area. There are endless possibilities with islands but first ask yourself: what are you looking for?
- USB Outlets – Connectivity is everywhere, and the kitchen is no exception. Having USB outlets in the kitchen is a must for most families nowadays. To determine where it would best be used, look at your kitchen layout and envision how you are going to live in the space. Where would you need to plug in your devices?
- Lighting – Is it not enough to just add some pendants. With the kitchen being the hub of the home, you need to make sure you have multiple sources of light. Natural light is great if your layout makes it possible to add windows or doors. Either way you still need down light, under-cabinet lighting, and hanging lights. Think about your lighting in levels from the top down and about where tasks will be performed. Your pendants are more the jewelry that you add to pull everything together.
